Adapt2Fit website - well done to our friends at Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living and Capability Scotland for putting together this fantastic, user friendly guide to adapting your home. Alongside the adaptation guidance there is full explanation of a wheelchair accessible property too.
A Merry Christmas from everyone here at DPHS(Fife). Here are a few Christmas Elves busy in the DPHS(Fife) office getting ready for Christmas!
Our friends at Independent Living in Scotland are holding a Disability Summit on Housing on 2nd December on the eve of United Nations International Disabled Peoples Day 2016. They want as many disabled people as possible to attend to ensure that the voices of disabled people are heard. A report from the summit is going to the ministers at Scottish Government and it is planned for the Minister for Social Security and Minister for Housing to attend. We will be running a workshop on the importance of independent housing information and advice and asking for feedback on experiences when the right housing in the right place at the right time can lead to independence - and of course when it doesn't work out this way, what the impact is.
iLiS are keen for as many disabled people to attend as possible and can cover costs of travel and other reasonable expenses if it helps you participate so please do get in touch with them.
Please the poster and booking details below.
Claire from our Self Directed Support project is attending the World Congress on Disability in Edinburgh today, spreading the word about our services. Showing on our laptop display - Shona, one of the SDS Volunteer Peer Support Mentors telling how she directs her own support. If you are interested to know more, please get in touch with us. There is another event taking place at Rothes Halls in early November where individuals living with disability can give their opinion and share their experiences of SDS (or trying to get SDS!) so please give us a ring if you are interested in going - we have several places available! SDSScotland really want to hear your views!
We are all excited getting ready for the World Congress on Disability being held in Edinburgh next week. Claire and Andy will be attending representing our work with SDS and Tracy from DPHS along with Ian one of our Board members will also be in attendance and ensuring our housing work is also highlighted to attendees. It looks like being a very high profile event so we look forward to sharing our experiences of SDS and Housing from Fife and also learning from others from across the country, Europe and beyond about what is working for them. We look forward to working alongside Inclusion Scotland, People First and SDS Scotland at our joint stalls!
Our SDS project are holding open meetings in a variety of venues across Fife so you can find out more about directing your own support. Come join us for a cuppa and a chat so Andy and Claire can answer any questions you may have and you can also meet one of our volunteer peer support mentors - someone who is managing their own (or a family member's) support through SDS. They'll be able to tell you how it worked for them and the difference it has made to their lives:
CUPAR: Wed 19th Oct, 2 - 330pm Age Concern Hall, Provost Wynd, Cupar, KY15 5HE
GLENROTHES: Fri 28th Oct, 2-330pm Lomond Centre, Woodside Way, Glenrothes, KY7 5RA
DUNFERMLINE: Fri 11th Nov, 2-330pm Holiday Inn Express, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, Ky11 8JY
If you are interested in coming please give us a wee ring at the office so we can plan ahead (catering etc!) - 01592 803280. If you can't make it but you are interested in having a chat anyway just let us know!
Did you know that we hold a regular CARF Pop Up clinic at our premises once a month?
Lorraine from CARF (Citizens Advice & Rights Fife) is here to ensure that our housing or self directed support clients have access to information to ensure they maximise their income by claiming anything they may be entitled to - ensuring that people can sustain their tenancy and live independently. Lorraine can also assist with completion of forms.
What great work Lorraine does! She has maximised income on many, many occasions for individuals using our service, has worked with people looking at budgeting and debt advice and has averted crisis on more than one occasion.
Lorraine's next visit to the office is mid August but appointments are already filling fast. Usually we have some drop in spots still available so why not give us a call to go on that list if it is something that might help you? Lorraine's appointments are held in the Education Room which is a private room on the premises and her work with individuals is confidential.
At DPHS(F) premises on 16th June we were pleased to support Claire from our SDS Options service to have an SDS Blether Afternoon Tea. It was very well attended as you can see from the photos and feedback was fab. This was so successful that SDS Options Fife are looking to deliver some small community based "Blethers" around Fife. If you, or someone you know, is interested in this no matter what end of Fife you may be at....give us a call and let's arrange it! Please feel free to share!!!
So chuffed for everyone here at DPHS(Fife) for us to be shortlisted at the Volunteer Awards this year in the Equality & Diversity category. Blush! Congratulations to all those nominated - it's sure to be a great night at Rothes Halls in Glenrothes. Well done to all the volunteers and organisations who have been nominated.
Claire Chue Hong, our Self Directed Support Options Advisor is also shortlisted in the category of Volunteer into Work and we look forward to sharing a good night together with the volunteers.
These awards are so important in recognition of the support that volunteers add to charitable organisations - enabling them to do more, and often in a different way.
Thank you to Fife Voluntary Action for organising and best wishes to all the volunteers and organisations nominated - have a great night!
